How Long Does Beef Broth Last?
Fridge
3-4 days after opening
Freezer
4-6 months
Beef broth shares chicken broth's 3-4 day opened fridge window, since the underlying spoilage risk of a low-acid, protein-rich cooked liquid doesn't change meaningfully based on which animal it was simmered from — the flavor is deeper, but the bacterial growth conditions are identical.
A common misconception worth correcting directly is that a more robustly flavored, longer-simmered broth is somehow more shelf-stable than a milder one — flavor intensity comes from how long and how densely the bones were simmered, not from anything that slows bacterial growth once the broth is opened and refrigerated. A bone broth simmered for an especially long stretch, twelve hours or more, to maximize collagen extraction doesn't gain any extra shelf-stability from that longer cooking time — the same 3-4 day fridge window applies regardless of how long the bones were simmered, since the finished liquid still needs the same cooling and refrigeration handling as a quicker-simmered batch.
Any fat that's solidified on top of a chilled container of beef broth is normal and not a spoilage sign on its own — it's simply rendered fat that rises and firms in the cold, distinct from the sour smell or cloudy, off appearance that actually signals a container has gone bad and should be discarded. Beef broth reduced down further than standard, into a more concentrated stock or demi-glace style base, behaves somewhat differently in storage than the thinner version, since a more concentrated liquid generally holds up a bit longer — though this site's standard 3-4 day guidance remains the safer default absent more specific information about a particular reduction.
Storage times and safe temperatures are general guidance from USDA FoodKeeper, USDA FSIS, and FDA sources — they are not a guarantee of safety. When in doubt, throw it out. This is not a substitute for professional food-safety advice.
