How Long Does Chicken Broth Last?

Fridge

3-4 days after opening

Freezer

4-6 months

Opened chicken broth's 3-4 day fridge window is fairly short for a cooked liquid, reflecting how quickly a protein-rich, low-acid liquid like broth supports bacterial growth once it's out of a sealed, sterilized container — that combination of low acidity and dissolved protein is exactly the kind of environment bacteria thrive in.

A sour or off smell and any cloudiness beyond broth's normal light haze are the clearest signs a container has turned, and either one means it should be discarded rather than boiled and used anyway — a common but mistaken assumption is that reheating broth to a boil neutralizes spoilage, when in practice heat kills some bacteria but doesn't reliably eliminate toxins some strains produce. Store-bought broth in an aseptic carton, the shelf-stable kind sold unrefrigerated until opened, follows a different unopened timeline than a can or a homemade batch, but switches to the same 3-4 day countdown as any other broth the moment it's opened and refrigerated.

Homemade broth, lacking the commercial preservatives or the sterilizing high-heat process a shelf-stable carton goes through before it's opened, should be treated with more caution than a store carton nearing the far end of its printed date — when in doubt, the shorter 3-4 day window is the safer number to plan around for anything made at home. A carton of bone broth, marketed slightly differently from standard chicken broth but built on a similar simmered-liquid base, follows the same 3-4 day opened window once refrigerated — the marketing distinction between the two products doesn't reflect any real difference in how quickly either one can spoil after opening.

Storage times and safe temperatures are general guidance from USDA FoodKeeper, USDA FSIS, and FDA sources — they are not a guarantee of safety. When in doubt, throw it out. This is not a substitute for professional food-safety advice.
