How Long Does Pineapple Chunks (Canned) Last?

Fridge

5-7 days after opening, stored in its juice

Freezer

10-12 months

Once opened, canned pineapple holds up in the fridge for about 5-7 days stored in its own liquid in a sealed container, considerably shorter than the years an unopened can lasts on a pantry shelf, since opening exposes it to air and bacteria the sealed can otherwise keeps out entirely.

A sour or fermented smell replacing the pineapple's normal sweet, tangy scent, visible mold (most likely to appear at the liquid's surface first), or a noticeably slimy texture on the chunks are the signs it's spoiled. An unopened can that's bulging, leaking, or severely dented along a seam should be discarded without opening it at all, since those are signs of a compromised seal that canned-goods safety guidance treats as a real risk regardless of the printed date.

An unopened can that's stored in a notably hot location, like a garage in summer, can degrade faster than the same can kept in a cool pantry, even though the printed shelf-stable date assumes fairly standard room-temperature storage — checking where a can has actually been kept matters if it's been stored somewhere unusually warm.

A can of pineapple stored on its side rather than upright doesn't affect shelf life meaningfully once unopened, though after opening, keeping the remaining chunks fully submerged in their liquid in an upright container helps protect the top layer from drying out.

Storage times and safe temperatures are general guidance from USDA FoodKeeper, USDA FSIS, and FDA sources — they are not a guarantee of safety. When in doubt, throw it out. This is not a substitute for professional food-safety advice.
